Trust the voters
SIR - May I point out, for the benefit of the contributors who fully support our
continuing membership of the EU, if they missed it, yesterday's outburst by
Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg's premier and leader of 13 single currency
members, when he wanted to keep Britain in the dark over the (constitution)
treaty.
He supported a public debate on it, except in Britain, saying he was astonished at those who are afraid of the people.
"One can always explain that what is in the interests of Europe is in the interests of our countries Britain is different, he continued, of course there will be transfers of sovereignty."
Brown must tell him that, unlike the Luxembourg people, he trusts the British with the referendum, promised by New Labour at the last election.
If the result goes against us, UKIP will have to go along with the result but not give up the ghost and fight on just as the Europhiles will certainly do if the vote goes the way we think it should and will.
I urge all of like mind to sign the petition, to the PM, calling for a referendum on the internet.

Ask the question
SIR - I am confident the smile would be wiped off Eric Firth's face if the
electorate at large were asked a specific question on the EU.
There would be at least 40 per cent, the figure in the poll referred to by him as being concerned about crime (T&A, June 9), who would want to opt out of the EU.
In fact, more then 50 per cent would be nearer the mark.
It appears Blair/Brown are going to renege on New Labour's commitment to hold a referendum on the constitution thrown out by the French and the Dutch, which Blair says is dead, but which Merkel says has only had the phraseology altered.
Blair has pounced on this to support his lie that no referendum is required. This lame duck PM has no mandate to sign us up to anything the French/German axis throws at him.
The EU, Mr Firth, with all your support, is costing me and the rest of the country, including yourself, £115 million net per day.

Still early days
SIR - Recently Eric Firth had a dig at UKIP, saying we had only mustered 1,000
votes. Well, it is relatively early days.
It took the Labour Party a long time to build up its support. In 1895, I believe, 28 candidates only managed about 44,000 votes nationwide and only had a minority government 28 years later.
Even Ramsay Macdonald did not support the general strike in 1926.
So I don't think Labour, New or Old, can crow about their electoral successes and certainly not the last ten years of Blair and Brown.
Does everybody know that the new UK payment Blair agreed to costs us £115 million net - I repeat net - every day of the year?
