Areas where competence has been handed over to Brussels:
- Environmental issues (including water and air pollution)
- Waste disposal
- Fisheries
- Employment and business law
- Agriculture (including Genetically Modified Organisms and
Foot and Mouth Disease)
- Animal testing
- Public Health (including tobacco and similar issues)
- Health & Safety
- Food safety
- Weights and measures
- Consumer protection
- Copyright and Data Protection
- Rules governing every kind of manufacture and food
production
- International trade policy
The EU now has influence over but will eventually take over
responsibility for:
- Regional Policy
- Transport Policy
- Allocation of funds for scientific research and defence
- Public purchasing
- Collection of statistics
- Macro-economic policy including budget strategy and general
taxation i.e. VAT rules
- 90% of Foreign Policy
- Britain's overseas aid programme
- Increasingly, judicial and police matters
Every Whitehall Ministry is now partly, or almost wholly,
engaged in implementing laws and policies decided in Brussels!
